Do you aspire to be a completist of your favorite author’s work? If you are a completist, how many authors are on your completist list? Are you a series completist? How many series have you completed?

Completist:
(for authors who have more than three books)
Annabel Monaghan (adult books)
While some readers enjoy Elin Hilderbrand or Emily Henry, my dependable, go-to author for my summer read is Annabel Monaghan. She writes romance with substantial content and thoughtful themes, mostly closed-door (Nora Goes Off Script is spicier than her others), zero to limited profanity, and likable/relatable characters. You can rely on Monaghan for a great summer read. Summer Romance is probably my favorite of her titles.
- Nora Goes Off Script (spiciest)
- Same Time Next Summer
- Summer Romance (my fav)
- It’s a Love Story
Louise Penny
(also, series completist)
Louise Penny is the popular author of the Chief Inspector Armand Gamache/Three Pines series (19). Some I’ve enjoyed more than others, but it’s a matter of personal preference and not her writing ability. My favorites include A Trick of the Light, Glass Houses, and All the Devils Are Here. This ongoing detective series is best read in order. #20 coming in October.
Fredrik Backman
I’m proud to be a Backman completist!
- A Man Called Ove
- The Deal of a Lifetime (novella)
- And Every Morning the Way Home Gets Longer and Longer (novella)
- The Answer is No (short story)
- Britt-Marie Was Here
- My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry (least fav)
- Things My Son Needs to Know About the World (nonfiction essay collection)
- Anxious People
- Beartown Trilogy (Beartown, Us Against You, and The Winners)
- My Friends (darker than the others)
Ruta Sepetys
Ruta Sepetys is a YA (adult crossover) historical fiction author. My favorite is I Must Betray You, but they are all good.
- Salt to the Sea (WWII)
- Between Shades of Gray (WWII)
- I Must Betray You (my fav)
- The Fountains of Silence
- Out of the Easy
- The Bletchley Riddle (middle grade/young adult)
Rachel Joyce
Although I’m a completist, I didn’t love her latest (The Homemade God). The writing in her new release is amazing as always, but the content is dark and I hope she returns to “uplit” and her mostly quirky and likable characters. (personal preference)
- The Harold Fry Trilogy (The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy, and Maureen)
- Miss Benson’s Beetle
- The Music Shop (one of the best endings ever)
- The Homemade God (least fav)
Sara Ackerman
I have loved Ackerman’s Peal Harbor women’s fiction/histfic! Her recent releases are contemporary and contemporary/histfic. I’m not sure how I feel about the genre switch.
- The Uncharted Flight of Olivia West (contemporary/histfic)
- The Island of Sweet Pies and Soldiers (WWII)
- The Lieutenant’s Nurse (WWII)
- Red Sky Over Hawaii (WWII)
- The Codebreaker’s Secret (WWII)
- Radar Girls (WWII…my favorite)
- The Maui Effect (contemporary/histfic)
Lesley Eames
I love home front WWII historical fiction and I love the Wartime Bookshop series which concluded this year. After I started the Wartime Bookshop series, I read her backlist and enjoyed them all.
- The Wartime Bookshop Series (The Wartime Bookshop, Land Girls at the Wartime Bookshop, Christmas at the Wartime Bookshop, Evacuees at the Wartime Bookshop, A Foundling at the Wartime Bookshop, and Wedding Bells at the Wartime Bookshop)
- The Orphan Twins
- The Brighton Guest House Girls
- The Silver Ladies of London (a.k.a The Runaway Women in London)
- The Wartime Singers
Jennifer Ryan
Jennifer Ryan is another author who is known for home front WWII histfic.
- Chilbury Ladies’ Choir
- The Kitchen Front
- The Wedding Dress Sewing Circle
- The Underground Library
- Spies of Shilling Lane (least fav)
Jane Harper
Jane Harper writes mysteries. Three of her novels feature Federal Agent Aaron Falk, and I grew attached to his character (The Exiles wraps up his storyline). I think this qualifies as a series, loosely connected by one character.
- The Dry (Falk)
- Force of Nature (Falk)
- Exiles (Falk)
- The Survivors
Series I’ve Completed (more than 3 books):
(even though I’m not an author completist)
I’ve read many duologies and trilogies, but I’m listing only series of four or more here.
Alexander McCall Smith: The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency
I’m not an author completist, but I have read the entire No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency (ongoing) series (26 installments), and that’s worth noting! In my opinion, the series is tired and he needs to retire it….. but I keep reading them. My favorite is The House of Unexpected Sisters (but I’m disappointed that he dropped this storyline and the sister was never mentioned again).
A.J. Pearce: Emmy Lake Chronicles
I’ve enjoyed The Emmy Lake Chronicles (four-book series)
Patricia McBride: The Library Girls
The Library Girls series (WWII home front) concluded this year, and I enjoyed each one.
- The Library Girls of the East End
- Hard Times for the East End Library Girls
- A Christmas Gift for the East End Library Girls
- A Better Tomorrow for the East End Library Girls
- Wedding Bells for the East End Library Girls
Liz Eeles: Heaven’s Cove
Recently, I enjoyed the eight-book Heaven’s Cove series (women’s fiction).
Sheila Roberts: Moonlight Harbor
Sheila Roberts is a prolific women’s fiction author, but I’ve only read her Moonlight Harbor series. (I believe this series is a spinoff of her Life in Icicle Falls series)
- Welcome to Moonlight Harbor
- Winter at the Beach
- The Summer Retreat
- Beachside Beginnings (this is the first one I read, and then I went back to read them in order before continuing)
- Sunset on Moonlight Beach
- Sand Dollar Lane
- Mermaid Beach
Marilynne Robinson: Gilead Series
I’ve read the four-book Gilead series:
C.S. Lewis: Chronicles of Narnia
I have read the Chronicles of Narnia series (7 installments)
Carolyn Keene: Nancy Drew
I’m almost certain that as a middle-grade reader, I read every installment in the Nancy Drew series.

I think I am a completist. If I start a series which I enjoy I just keep reading until I’ve finished the whole series. Inspector Armand was a favourite of mine. Thanks for joining us at #WOYBS? there are a number of authors you’ve mentioned that I will follow up on. Happy Reading! Sue L
I like to binge read a good series! Thanks for commenting!
Hi Carol, I’ve not heard that term before – completist – but it makes sense when I stop and think about it. I would say I am ‘mostly’ a completist and love getting into a good series, seeing how the characters develop, where the story takes us and how things progress throughout the series. I can say I also would have read all of the Nancy Drew series when I was younger! Also The famous Five, Secret Seven….what a great premise for a post! Thanks for joining us for #WOYBS and I’m very impressed with your record keeping!!
I love to binge read a great series! Probably my fav reading experience!
The only one on your list that I try to read all of is Jane Harper. I also like Nora Roberts and will read any of her books and I have nearly read all the Jack Reacher books by Lee Child. I have a couple more authors that I can think of for their urban fantasy series I like, The Imp series by Debra Dunbar and The Alex Craft books by Kalayna Price.
I think Harper could have made a longer series with her Falk character! Maybe more is coming?
Yes it was a shame that there were so few.
I love this list. I am a completist too. Some new ones to add to my tbr stack. Thanks you ๐
Thanks for stopping by and commenting! Happy reading!
You have reminded me I have a few series to catch up on. Thanks, Carol. ๐๐๐
Happy reading!
Oh man, I love lists (I even have a notebook my sister gave me, titled “Obsessive Lists” and I am filling it) and you are giving me the perfect opportunity. I generally have forced myself to be a completist in several cases, because actually, I tend to hold back, I don’t want to read them all, then there’s nothing left, unless they write another one. But in some cases, I read each as it comes out and so I have them all! My completist authors so far are: Ann Patchett, Elizabeth Strout, Amor Towles, Monica Wood, Jane Austen, Thomas Hardy, Alan Bradley (Flavia novels), Sue Grafton, Martha Grimes, P.D.James, Rosie Walsh, Richard Osman, TJ Newman, Liane Moriarty, Tayari Jones, Patrick O’Brian and Peter Mayle. Some I WISH to complete (someday) are Barbara Kingsolver, Anna Quindlen, Anne Tyler, Jane Harper and I’m sure others.
I”m going to skip the series question because there are just too many, and I don’t want to hog all your space!
Wow! What an impressive author completist list! It requires a place of honor in your notebook! Thanks for sharing!
I have so many authors that I read and so many series on the go that it is hard to complete them all. I am a Backman completist as well as Lisa Gardner and Karin Slaughter. Sue Grafton, Sophie Kinsella and many more. I love doing the Finishing the series challenge each year, so I can finish a few series I have on the go.
So many good books!
That’s an impressive list. Once I begin a series I do like to finish it. There have been some exceptions, some where I binge until I’m done and others where I dip in and out, but I do like to complete it.
Thanks for sharing! I canโt NOT complete a series! My fav is a series thatโs already finished so I can binge read it!
