My Summary of Same Time Next Summer:

Samantha returns to her family’s beach house to check out a venue for her upcoming wedding. She brings her fiance, Jack, with her but wonders how he will view her beloved and chaotic childhood home and her artistic parents. Sam hasn’t seen her childhood sweetheart, Wyatt, in fourteen years and runs into him unexpectedly. Old feelings resurface and Sam needs to reconcile her feelings for Wyatt and their breakup. Can she keep her feelings for Wyatt in the past?

My Thoughts:

Loved Nora Goes Off Script

Honestly, I passed on Same Time Next Summer at first because the premise reminded me of Every Summer After which I felt “meh” about (even though others love it). However, I loved Nora Goes Off Script by the same author and I knew I had to give her new release a try. In my opinion, the execution of this familiar trope (reconnecting with a childhood sweetheart) is done well here. The childhood flashbacks are brief and fast-paced and give us the needed back story. In other words, it doesn’t feel like you’re reading YA (which was one frustration with Every Summer After).

Beach Bag Approved

Actually, any book I read by the ocean or the pool is a beach read to me. But if you prefer quick-reading, light women’s fiction and sweet (not spicey) romance with likable characters, snappy writing, and an engaging premise, you might like Same Time Next Summer for your beach bag.

Themes

This heartfelt and “uplit” story has some lovely themes including supportive family, childhood memories, first love, and home.

Recommending Same Time Next Summer

Same Time Next Summer is beach bag or pool bag recommendable! It’s easy to pick up and put down and the content is not too heavy. No ugly crying. It’s one you could pass around to all your gal pals. I think Annabel Monaghan is my new auto-buy summer author.

My Rating:  4  Stars

Rating: 4 out of 5.

  1. Oh – I really liked Norah Goes Off Script as well. See if this new one pops up at my library. Just finishing The Secret Book of Flora Lea and really loved it.

    • I’m growing to like Monaghan….it’s difficult to find a women’s fiction/romance author that is just right! This one is less spicy than Nora. Flora Lea is a good read! Happy summer reading Rhonda!

  2. I enjoyed reading your review of “Same Time Next Summer” by Annabel Monaghan. The way you described the engaging premise, likable characters, and snappy writing has definitely made me curious about the book. I’m interested to know more about the execution of the childhood sweetheart trope and how it differs from other books you’ve read. Additionally, since you mentioned it’s a great beach or pool read, what are some of the aspects that make it a perfect companion for a summer day?

    • I think it might be a perfect beach read for some readers because it’s light reading, easy to pick up and put down, a happy ever after ending, and realistic and likable characters. Thanks for commenting!
