Summary:

The Wartime Book Shop series follows the lives of Alice, Kate, and Naomi as they support each other, maintain a “pop up style” book shop and keep community spirits high on the “home front” in their rural English Village during WWII. Evacuees at the Wartime Book Shop (#4 in the series) shares the heartfelt story of a group of evacuees who turn up unexpectedly and the village rallying to help them. Although the stories in this series can be read as stand alones, it is a more satisfying reading experience to read them in order.

Uplit Women’s Fiction Series

I enjoy “uplit” women’s fiction as lovely and satisfying change-of-pace reads. The stories in this series are thoughtful and heartfelt but not overly emotional or dramatic. Alice, Kate, and Naomi are likable and admirable main characters. They support each other and have the well-being of the community at heart. Each woman is strong, determined, and influential. It has been interesting to watch their growth throughout the series. These women feel like friends and I look forward to each installment.

Themes

Thoughtful themes include friendship, women supporting women, making the best of challenging times during the difficult war years, community spirit (a safety net for all), love of books and reading, leadership, and taking risks. Each women has a love interest which will delight many readers who enjoy a side of sweet (firmly closed door) romance.

Home Front

I think the stories in this series are an interesting peek into typical village life on the home front during WWII. The situations are realistic and compelling.

Memorable Characters

I’d love to introduce you to three lovely characters! Sweet and compassionate Alice who is a doctor’s daughter, lives with a permanently injured hand, and is worried about her new husband fighting in the war; Kate is feisty and colorful, a hard worker, and loves an injured RAF soldier; Naomi is recently divorced from her scoundrel of a husband, is surprisingly generous, and is a late bloomer. I love that each book in the series includes each of the three women in its storylines. In this recent installment, Naomi’s character growth as she cares for a group of evacuees (mothers and children) is quite surprising and heart warming!

Favorite New-to-Me Author

Discovering Lesley Eames is a delight! After I read the first two books in this series, I read her entire backlist while waiting for the third installment. If you are looking for “uplit” women’s histfic with likable characters, engaging storylines, sweet (closed door) romance, no profanity (or other graphic content), and just the right amount of drama, and happy endings, give Eames a try! I can recommend her books to anyone!

Recommending Evacuees at the Wartime Book Shop

I can enthusiastically recommend this historical women’s fiction series for readers who enjoy easy reading fiction with substantial content. Fans of “women on the home front” stories, sweet romance, and women supporting women will appreciate Evacuees at the Wartime Book Shop and the entire series.

  1. What a fabulous and thoughtful review. I enjoy WW2 home-front stories and this series sounds like a good one.

  2. Wonderful review, Carol. I haven’t read anything written by Lesley Eames, but I am hoping to. My library doesn’t carry her books, so I will have to see what I can find to buy.
