My Summary:
Thanks #NetGalley @VintageAnchor for a complimentary eARC of #TheFatalUnpleasantnessAtNetherfield upon my request. All opinions are my own.
The Fatal Unpleasantness at Nethefield is installment #5 in the Darcy/Tilney historical mystery series. In this installment, Jonathan Darcey and Juliet Tilney solve another mystery and take a step forward in their sweet romance.
My Thoughts:
F I N A L L Y !
The most important element of this book to report is that there is FINALLY some progress in the slowest of slow-burn romances between Juliet and Jonathan!!! You’ll need to wait until the final few pages, but it’s worth the wait! (no spoilers)
One thing that makes the romance interesting is that Jonathan is neurodivergent. I love how Juliet understands him and works with him.
In my review of installment #4, I stated that I was going to give up on the series if nothing happened to advance the romance in installment #5. I’m not a huge fan of cozy mysteries, so the romance was keeping me invested. To see no progression in 4 installments was discouraging.
Now that you have the romance newsflash, everything else I have to say is anticlimactic!
Austenesque
If you enjoy the world of Jane Austen, you will appreciate this story and its strong sense of place and time. From the social scene to the etiquette to the clothing to the characters, you will feel transported to Regency England. You do not have to have read the work of Jane Austen to enjoy this cozy mystery series, but familiarity will enhance your reading experience.
Cozy Mysteries
If youโve not read a cozy mystery, you might be delighted by a gently told mystery featuring these likable amateur detectives, Juliet Tilney and Jonathan Darcey. As a team, Juliet and Jonathan have unusual crime-solving abilities. They are imaginative, intuitive, and smartโฆ.and quite attracted to each other.
Recommending The Fatal Unpleasantness at Netherfield:
If you’ve read any of the four prior installments, I recommend The Fatal Unpleasantness at Netherfield (#5) for an update on the Darcey/Tilney slow-burn romance. Fans of quietly written cozy mysteries set in the world of Jane Austen will enjoy these atmospheric stories.
Related: My review of The Rushworth Family Plot, The Perils of Lady Catherine de Bourgh, and The Late Mrs. Willoughby (probably my favorite installment)
My Rating: 3.5 Stars (rounded up)
