Author’s Summary of The Box:

Welcome to my stop on the book tour for The Box. Thanks @JoLinsdell for a complimentary electronic copy of #TheBox upon my request. All opinions are my own.

In her own words:The Box is a story about a young boy and the fun he has playing with a cardboard box. My own kids loved creative play and we’ve made several things out of leftover cardboard boxes over the years. Whenever we had some boxes around they never got thrown out without first being played with. The Box provides inspiration for easy creative play that will keep kids busy for hours. Whether they just imagine that the box is a pirate ship or if you actually turn the box into a castle for them, they will enjoy themselves.

In a world that is more and more about high tech, expensive, toys I think it’s important to show kids that they can have just as much (if not more) fun using their imagination.”

My Thoughts:

A Box is Just a Box, Except When it’s Not

“A box is just a box, except when it’s not” is an easily memorized theme repeated throughout the story. Children love repetition. Each page offers a fresh idea for imaginative play. I admit that I expected to see a cat peeking around the corner…….is it even a box if no cat is tempted to hop inside?!?!

Colorful, Simple, and Appealing

Toddlers and preschool children will love the illustrations and the colorful simplicity of this relatable and imaginative picture book! The kid-friendly font and bright colors add to the appeal. When my children were small, any large box could hold their interest for hours!

Girls Also Like Boxes

In this story, a young boy shares his experience of playing with a box. Maybe the author will write a sequel where a young girl imagines her box-playing experience! I wonder how many of the experiences would be similar. How would they differ? What if a girl and a boy played with a box? What experiences would they imagine together?

  1. Thank you so much for this wonderful review Carol. I’m thrilled you liked The Box. I originally wrote the story for my son which is why the character is a boy but I’m sure little girls would enjoy doing the same type of things with a box. You’ve made me consider the idea of creating a female version of the book though.
Over the years I’ve made doll’s houses, kitchens, and a bunch of other stuff out of boxes for my niece too. She enjoyed playing in the cardboard castle just as much as the boys though ๐Ÿ˜Š
