My Summary:

Spring at Flora’s House is installment #2 in a planned novella series, a spin-off of Little Wing. JB, Drew, and Taylor, three young Americans, arrive at Flora’s House. They party some, but their main objective is to run a marathon,,,their own marathon. Their partying and ambitious plans attract attention from the locals. Spring is a time for renewal and growth and this particular spring, ambition will test their friendship.

My Thoughts:

4 Book Novella Series

The planned four-book Flora’s House novella series has its origins in Little Wing, Flora’s story. It is not necessary to read Little Wing before reading the novella series, but know that references are made to Flora. The house she lived in is now a rental cottage, and each novella will see a new set of occupants winter, spring, summer, and fall.

The series is loosely connected by place and each is a stand-alone with frequent appearances by members of the community.

The author has planned a four-book series, one for each season. Christmas at Flora’s House and Spring at Flora’s House have been released, and I’m looking forward to the Summer and Autumn novellas.

Strong Sense of Place

One compelling aspect of the series is the strong sense of place. The setting is as important as a character. The author’s vivid descriptions transport readers to the remote and wild Outer Hebrides, Scotland. If you appreciate a strong sense of place, you will find a great deal to love in the author’s prose.

Interesting Characters

If I were to tell you this is a story of friendship, you might assume women characters. I was delighted to discover that this is a story of male friendship. Of course, this comes with more colorful language, a few crude jokes, drinking, partying, and horseplay. Underneath the bravado and posturing, these are three great young adults who can be tender-hearted, considerate, compassionate, and kind.

JB , Drew, and Taylor are three America students who are runners and are traveling to compete in various marathons. They come to Harris in the Outer Hebrides because of Taylor. No official marathon is planned, but the friends intend on running one anyway. When we get to know the guys, we find out that JB is living with the pressure of pleasing his overbearing father, Drew is trying to find himself, and Taylor intends on exploring his Scottish heritage. The story is mostly told from Taylor’s point of view.

In addition to personal struggles/challenges, I found the friendship theme well-developed and heartfelt. The guys grow in their abilities to support each other, act compassionately, and offer encouragement.

The Marathon and the Finish Line

Is the finish line the most important thing about a marathon? What is inspiring about a marathon? How do you prepare for a marathon? Does it require support along the way? Long-distance runners will find much to appreciate and relate to in this story!

Themes

Thoughtful themes include male friendship and competition, the challenges of running a marathon, pleasing parents, heritage, finding your voice, ambition, carving your own path, and taking risks.

Content Consideration: Drinking, crude language and humor

Recommending Spring at Flora’s House:

I enjoyed the unique premise and always appreciate a friendship theme. Male characters are a welcome change of pace from women’s fiction/female friendships. If you enjoy novellas (Novellas in November!) and enjoy a well-written series with well-rounded characters, add this compelling and uplifting novella series to your TBR!

Meet the Author of Spring at Flora’s House, Freya North

Author, Freya North

I’m the British author of 16 bestselling novels and have been published for almost 30 years! Alongside my traditionally published novels such as THE UNFINISHED BUSINESS OF EADIE BROWNE and LITTLE WING, I am also independently publishing too! These are exciting times for authors as never has there been such a fertile time to reach the reader…and my readers are so fundamentally important to me.

I’m thrilled to bring you the first of a series of novella’s set in Flora’s House – a wee white cottage on a wild, beautiful and remote part of the UK: the Outer Hebrides of Scotland.

CHRISTMAS AT FLORA’S HOUSE is the first in the series – an emotional, heartfelt story set over the festive period featuring a long-married couple and their first ever Christmas away from home. I had a little cry as I wrote it…and I hope so much you’ll enjoy it!

The Unfinished Business of Eadie Browne is very much my own intensely personal love letter to youth, to friendship and to coming-of-age in the late 80s/ 1990s… Much of it was drawn from my own memories of leaving home for Manchester Uni and how that FELT.

My 15th novel Little Wing was written during the first lockdown. Set partly in the Outer Hebrides and interweaving the secrets and lies of two families over two time frames – it was a joy to research and write and certainly kept me sane during the Pandemic. In Spring this year (2025) I wrote its ‘companion piece’ STILL TIME – it’s not a ‘sequel’ per se as I conceived and wrote the two books to be read in any order. I don’t have a pub.date yet – but I can’t wait to tell you more!

I’ve always been focused on a sense of place being a key feature of my writing – settings being a leading character, not merely a backdrop. Previous locations have included North Norfolk, British Columbia, Derbyshire, Vermont, France, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall… I’m an avid reader too – and the novels of Barbara Trapido, Jane Gardam, Rose Tremain and Mary Wesley inspired me to write. I hope you enjoy my books – please keep in touch via my website, Facebook, Twitter and Insta! Happy Reading!
