Welcome to #ThrowBackThursday where I highlight an older review or post a current review of a backlist title. This week in celebration of #MiddleGradeMarch I’m featuring two page-turning histfic reads, A Place to Hang the Moon by Kate Albus and Operation: Happy by Jenni L. Walsh.

I’m linking up with Davida @ The Chocolate Lady’s Book Review Blog for #ThrowbackThursday.

A Place to Hang the Moon by Kate Albus (cover) Image: three children stand on the steps of a library

During WW11, Anna, Edmund, and William are evacuated from London to the countryside where it is safer from bombing. The children are seeking more than safety from bombs as they have just lost their grandmother, their only guardian, and are in need of a “forever” home. The children encounter cruelty, cold, and hunger. They find one place of comfort and refuge in the library; The librarian, Mrs. Mรผller becomes a significant person in their lives. With her, they experience cozy fires, hot chocolate, hot buttered thickly-sliced toast, bedtime stories, and someone who thinks they “hang the moon.”

(perfect for younger middle grade readers)

Operation: Happy by Jenni L. Walsh (cover) a girl and her dog

Operation: Happy is the heartwarming middle-grade story of Jody, her dog, and her family as Pearl Harbor survivors.

It’s 1940 and Jody and her military family (including “Happy”) have just moved to a naval base in Hawaii where her dad is stationed. Jody enjoys the company of her dog, Happy, and works diligently on her top ten list of things she likes best about her new home. Jody’s mom is stressed and worried about the war being fought in Europe. One day, Pearl Harbor is attacked and Jody and her mom and sister are evacuated to San Francisco. The family misses Dad, Mom experiences depression, and Jody finds school a difficult adjustment. Out of desperation, Jody comes up with a plan to help her family.

For readers who enjoy a story from the dog’s POV. See my full review here.

***spoiler: the dog is fine!

  1. You’ve convinced me to try A Place to Hang the Moon! It must be popular because all the copies at the library are currently checked out!

  2. I put both of these on my MG shelf when I read your reviews. I would have read them this month, but didn’t realize this was middlegrades March. There’s way too much happening in March.
