My Summary of Whirlwind:

Thanks @brwritingpublisher and author @kkbrees for a complimentary e ARC of #Whirlwind upon my request. All opinions are my own.

In 1940, MI6 Agents Katrin Nissen and her husband, John, follow Churchill’s directive to hunt down and recover stolen art treasures that Hitler is determined to stockpile.

My Thoughts:

Another Facet of WWII

While the Luftwaffe and the Royal Air Force are fighting for control of the skies over the English Channel, Hitler’s spies and thieves are at work stealing priceless artwork to hide in Austria. When Churchill receives the news, he is furious and determined to stop the heists and recover the artwork. He assigns the task to MI6.

Plot-Driven

Fans of page-turning spy fiction will enjoy this plot-driven story. The art thefts require urgent action and time to save them is running out.

Admirable Characters

Although the story is plot-driven, the author provides some character development as well. Katrin is a forty-something Yale professor of botany with a brilliant mind, quick wit, and leadership ability. We follow her most closely and are treated to brief romantic moments when she and her husband John can meet up. They are a supportive and effective team even though they often work on separate aspects of the case.

Several (underestimated) women on the Channel Islands feature prominently in the story, and we appreciate their patriotism, insight, keen eye, and bravery.

Series

If you enjoy lovely writing, leading characters like Katrin, and spy fiction, you will be pleased to know this is #3 in a stand-alone, loosely connected series.

Content Consideration: minimal and not overly graphic violence

Recommending Whirlwind

I’m recommending Whirlwind for fans of well-written and fast-paced spy fiction featuring MI6 and an admirable female lead.

My Rating: 4 Stars

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Meet the Author of Whirlwind, Karen Brees

Author of Whirlwind, Karen Brees

Karen K. Brees is the Amazon #1 best-selling author of The World War II Adventures of MI6 Agent Katrin Nissen Series: Headwind, Crosswind, and Whirlwind. She is also the author of The Esposito Caper, The Self-Sufficient Kitchen – Preserving (2022, DK Publishing | Alpha Books, Penguin Random House) and is author and co-author of numerous additional titles in the health and general interest field, including Getting Real about Getting Older. She lives north of Seattle, where she is at work on Disorganized Crime, the sequel to The Esposito Caper.

She’s been a teacher, bookmobile librarian, goat herder, and is now an obsessed gardener. An historian by training, she’s found her niche in WWII, a time when the line between good and evil was clear. She’s also into crime and humor. That’s the happy mix of The Esposito Caper and Disorganized Crime.

  1. I am not a huge fan of espionage, but have enjoyed a few of them. My library has Crosswind and Headwind, but not this one yet. I am not familiar with this author or series, but it sounds like one I would enjoy. Nice review, Carol.
