I Must Betray You by Ruta Sepetys is relevant, timely, and unputdownable young adult historical fiction, engaging from the first page.

One reason I love Ruta Sepetys is that each of her books is equally enjoyed by adults. Have you read her?

Welcome to #ThrowBackThursday where I highlight an older review or post a current review of a backlist title. Today, I’m sharing a compelling and favorite young adult selection (enjoyable for all ages), I Must Betray You by Ruta Sepetys.

I’m linking up with Davida @ The Lady’s Book Review Blog for #ThrowbackThursday.

In 1989, Romania is ruled by dictator, Nicalae Ceausescu. Seventeen-year-old Cristian along with other citizens of Romania deal with intimidation, isolation, fear, repression, hunger, blackmail, informants, and having no voice. Cristian is forced into the impossible situation of betraying friends and family. He hears rumors of revolution and yearns to join it. But what can a young man do? How can he make a difference? How will he make his voice heard?

“We were marked ‘present’ in attendance but were often absent from ourselves.”

  1. I haven’t read this one yet, but it’s sitting on my bookshelf. I love her books because evem though the characters are teens, the plots are appealing to adults.

    • Happy to hear you enjoyed I Must Betray You! I think Salt to the Sea is my next fav. The mc in Between Shades of Gray is related to a mc in Salt to the Sea …it’s a much sadder book though. Fountains of Silence is also good. Out of the Easy is ok but I think it’s her first and she hadn’t hit her stride yet.
