Do you have bookish superpowers? Can you name one bookish superpower? Is there one you wish you had that you do not have?

My 10 Bookish Superpowers

I disappear into books. What's your superpower?
Not only do I disappear into books, I disappear down Google rabbit holes!

I’m linking up today with That Artsy Reader Girl for Top Ten Tuesday: Bookish Superpowers I Wish I Had.

Ooops! I wrote this prompt down incorrectly in my planner and when I went to publish and link up, I realized I was supposed to write about superpowers I WISH I had. I’m not going to rewrite my post, so you’ll get a bit of a spin! Maybe I’ll revisit this prompt with a proper post in the future.

Iโ€™m also linking up today with the 2024 Book Blog Discussion Challenge hosted by Nicole @ Feed Your Fiction Addiction and Shannon @ It Starts at Midnight

I’m a Super Star in My Sport

I’m a superstar in my chosen sport of reading! I compete with myself and keep stats!

Reading is my favorite sport (text alongside a tall stack of books)

I Can Turn Any Conversation Into a Book Conversation

Annoying?! Well…perhaps. Nonetheless, I persist.

A few years ago, I rehomed my physical books and went entirely digital. I always have my phone with me and usually my kindle, so I carry my complete library (including library loans) with me at all times.

I Can Read a 300-400 Page Book in One Day

This means I’m retired! I’m also a fairly fast reader…faster than average I think.

I Can Read in Any Environment

TV blaring? No problem.
A crowded room? My escape.
A coffee shop or the corner bagel hangout? Heaven.
Waiting rooms? My favorite. (how do people just sit there?!)
The beach? Probably the most challenging environment….the wide expanse of water and the crashing waves are hypnotic, right?!
Disneyland? Yep. I once read an entire Danielle Steel novel at Disneyland. My teenager and her friends were not yet driving but didn’t need me to supervise either. A bench and a book to the rescue.
A car trip? Audiobook, please.

Can you read anywhere?

I Can Recommend a Book You’ll Enjoy

If we can find a common genre, I can think of a recommendation. I believe that if you don’t enjoy reading, you haven’t yet found the right book. My 10-year-old grandson enjoys video games and internet research more than traditional reading. Does that stop me?! I bought him The First Cat in Space Ate Pizza (graphic novel) for Christmas and he read it in one sitting. He was even excited that I bought him the sequel for Valentine’s Day! My older grandson still reports that Wild Robot was his favorite book when he was ten (you guessed it, a Christmas gift!). I also have several adult success stories!

I Can DNF at Lightning Speed!

(*DNF=Did Not Finish)
DNFing gets easier with practice! (you might enjoy this post about DNFing)
Do you DNF books?

I Can Hear Books Talking to Each Other

I must admit that this is one of my most fun superpowers! I love to make book connections in various ways. For example, I had just finished The First Ladies and the next book I picked up referenced Mary McLeod Bethune. Whoa! I know her! At other times, a certain location (especially WWII European settings) causes me to wonder if a character in one book knows a character in my current read. Occasionally, I’ll read a few books a year that have a common theme. I think avid readers might know what I’m talking about. It’s difficult to explain. How have you experienced books talking to each other?

Thousands of Favorite Bookish Characters Live in My Imagination

I often wonder what has become of my favorite characters. I still can’t look up in space without thinking of Rylan and Rocky! IYKYK. When I heard recent space news about the Mars helicopter that broke its blade, I immediately felt sad because of The Rover’s Story (middle grade) which is based on the real-life Perseverance Mars land rover and the Ingenuity helicopter. Yes, I have an active imagination!

I Have the Superpower to Support Authors

I admire and appreciate authors who can transport me to a fictional world, engage me for hours and hours, give me book hangovers, and cause me to care deeply for characters. I can play a part in an author’s success by buying, reading, appreciating, and promoting their work.

Time to confess! Do you have a bookish superpower? Do we share a superpower? Is there a bookish superpower you wish you had?

  1. I love your take on this Carol, I think knowing your actual bookish superpowers must come before the wishlist!

I absolutely love the books talking to each other superpower, I know and adore that feeling, those threads that connect and call you to your next read, often abandoning other plans or inclinations.
And I’ve always thought that reading has given us ever more active imaginations, not to mention empathy, that ability to take see from multiple perspectives! Thanks for sharing your bookish superpowers Carol and keep up with the recommendations to the younger generation, that’s a top superpower indeed.

  2. What a great list of superpowers. I wish that I shared the one about being able to read despite distractions. I find it really hard to concentrate on reading if the TV is on in the same room.

    • Wow! What a cool superpower Bonnie! Sorry about the delayed response…I found your comment in my spam folder today. I’m hopping over now to read your post.

    • I find it difficult to read a physical book now! I’m addicted to larger font sizes! Hopping over to read your post (I just found your comment in my spam folder).

  3. I can read in almost any environment. I used to read a lot at work and work in the trucking industry. Then I changed shifts, and it’s a bit too busy to read as much at work. I generally have a book with me every time I head out, because you never know how long you’ll have to wait some place. I’ve even listened to an audiobook while grocery shopping (I pause it when I get to the checkout, because that’s just rude).

  4. The one superpower we have in common is turning any conversation into one about books. I see someone in a cafe/waiting room etc reading a book and just have to ask them what theyre reading and whether they’d recommend it!

You don’t have any physical books?? Wow. Decades ago I wished that someone would do for books what Steve Jobs did for music (ie, create a device like an Ipod). Well that happened and eventually I got a sony e reader (awful) and then a Kindle. But I cling to my paper copies – there’s just nothing like the experience of opening a new book and feeling that paper beneath my fingers.

    • It drives me crazy not knowing what someone is reading!
No physical books was born of necessity at first. My daughter and her soon moved in with us and my book cases were in their rooms and I didnโ€™t have the space in my house to relocate the bookshelves โ€ฆplus my sister had recently died and I had to dispose of all her books. It caused me to think of what my family would do with all my booksโ€ฆ..so I decided it was the right time to at least relieve that one logistical burden. I still miss seeing books in my home. I felt like I had given away the soul of my house for a while! I get my physical book fix when I buy books for others and can handle them for a bit.

  5. You absolutely rocked this!!!!! I laughed at the number of books you could carry. Back in the day, when I had to take the bus to work, I had music on a ….wait for it…cassette Walman…a lunch bag, a purse, and BOOKS.

  6. I love this post Carol. Yes, I have several of these superpowers. I would add the power to sniff out a bookstore or sale wherever I go. I know you are now all digital, but I still have lots of physical books and add to those bookshelves often.

  7. I love all of your superpowers, Carol, especially “Books Talking to Each Other”! I often see all kinds of links between various books, but I never thought of describing the process like that.
