For the first time on the blog, I’m talking about my bookish wishes. Do you have wishes that are book-related? Here are ten of my wishes just for you.

I’m linking up today with That Artsy Reader Girl for Top Ten Tuesday. The intent of this prompt is to list ten books on our wish list, but since I recently published a TBR, I think I’ll pivot and talk about ten bookish wishes for YOU.

One of the fondest memories of my youth is settling into the week between Christmas and New Year’s with a book I received for Christmas. Since this was a break from school, I was free to read all day and into the evening. Pure joy! The book pictured below is from my childhood library! We don’t have to be on school break to duplicate that experience. Light the fire, grab a cozy blanket, pour yourself a warm beverage, and enjoy some reading “escapism.” Do you hope there’s a book for your under the tree? Or maybe you bought yourself a book?

The anticipation of a new installment in your favorite series or a new release by your auto-buy author is among life’s simple pleasures! I’m looking forward to the new Kate Quinn release in February.

One of the joys of reading is to share the reading experience with others. This doesn’t have to be in person. We can join an online bookclub, participate in a Bookstagram buddy read, or meet a friend for coffee. Readers with whom I shared Invention of Wings are pictured below (I’m third from left in back….next to me on my left is my mom from the picture below this one. While I’m making introductions, the person first from left in the first row is my sister….and the person 4th from left in the first row is my daughter….others are dear bookish friends).

Pictured below is me with my first reading buddy, Mom (also second from left in back row in the above photo). We still read the same books today (we share a kindle account).

If you’re bored with a book, set it aside. Life is too short to read books that are not bringing us joy. Chores can wait! I hope your 2024 reading year is filled with unforgettable and unputdownable reads!

Armchair travel is enjoyable, but how much more fun is an actual trip? Walk the rainy streets, smell the seasonal flowers, sit on the bluff overlooking the ocean, browse the quaint independent bookstore, meet the locals, ride public transportation, etc. Combining books with travel seems ideal!

A few years ago, I read The Beautiful Strangers which is set at the beautiful and historic Del Coronado Hotel on Coronado Island off San Diego, California. That was a unique reading experience for me because I spent a few summer days of one memorable teenage summer on Coronado Island staying with a friend’s family. We frequented the beach in front of Hotel Del, flirted with the navy guys, and even sneaked in to roam the halls! The entire time I read that book, I felt the draw to return and spend a few nights at that hotel!

Am I the only one whose entire reading experience can be affected by an unsatisfactory ending? I don’t necessarily need happy endings tied in a neat bow, but I do appreciate it when they are satisfactory. I wrote an entire post about endings here and here.

I disappear into books. What's your superpower?

May many of the characters you meet be of the admirable, memorable, unforgettable, and inspiring sort! One of my most unforgettable characters in recent years is Rocky in Project Hail Mary. IYKYK. I also wish you reliable narrators….unless you prefer them unreliable. Some of my reading buddies enjoy unlikable and unreliable. Whichever you prefer, I wish you an abundance of them.

Immerse yourself in another culture (Lady Tan’s Circle of Women), explore a subject out of your comfort zone (who knew I would enjoy a book about competitive rowing? The Boys in the Boat), read about a life you’ll never live (How Far to the Promised Land), try a middle grade book (A Place to Hang the Moon)….the possibilities are endless. You just might discover one great read!

It has been said that the reading experience is like looking through a window or like looking into a mirror. Both experiences are valuable. “Window” experiences help you see life from different perspectives. You are looking in and learning but not necessarily relating. “Mirror” experiences allow you to see yourself in the characters or circumstances “Mirror” experiences promote deep connections to the reading and might be your most memorable reading experiences because you see yourself or your culture or circumstances.

Maybe you’ve never set a reading goal or tracked your reading. Perhaps you’d like to read more nonfiction or read more “own voices” authors. This might be the year you join a book club or get a library card. Whatever goal you set for yourself, I hope you find success and joy in the experience.

  1. I love this twist on the book wishes topic. Reading all this made me smile so much, thank you!

  2. I love this list SO much, Carol! Such a lovely idea. I just visited Leavenworth, Washington, a little mountain town that is the setting for one of my favorite cozy mystery series. It was fun to see it for myself and compare/contrast the book Leavenworth with the real Leavenworth. Combining books and travel is great fun!

How wonderful that you have a book club that includes family members. I love that.

    Happy TTT (on a Wednesday)!
