For Today’s Top Ten Tuesday, I’m talking about 10 Things that make me instantly want to read a certain book. Of course, I have my favorite genres which include historical fiction, uplit (with substantial story lines), narrative nonfiction, an occasional women’s fiction, literary fiction, and selected memoirs and biographies. However, what causes me to pick up a certain book?
What is one thing that causes you to pick up a book?
(In no particular order)
1. Women Supporting Women/Fierce Friendships
(The Kitchen Front and The Wedding Dress Sewing Circle are examples of women supporting women on the home front during WWII; The Rose Code is a story of fierce friendships)
2. Favorite Author
(Fredrik Backman, for one)
3. Quirky Character
(see a few of my favorites in this post)
4. Unique Premise
(West With Giraffes is a recent example)
5. Diverse Reads
(always more to learn in reading from different perspectives The Girl With the Louding Voice and Last Summer on State Street are examples)
6. Books About Books, Bookshops, or Libraries
(books about books post here, stories set in bookshops here, and a post about stories set in libraries here)
7. Family Drama or Stories of Sisters
(not too dysfunctional; A Place For Us and Little Fires Everywhere are two examples of family drama; The Sisters of Sea View and the Vicarage Series are two examples of sister stories)
8. Favorite Themes
(found family, reconciliation, adoption, starting over, second chances, untold stories of difference makers (biographical histfic), forgiveness, friendship, etc.)
9. Narrative Nonfiction
(I love nonfiction that reads like fiction, a recent example is The Woman They Could Not Silence)
10. A Page-Turner
(The Girl From Guernica is a recent example)
QOTD:

Favourite authors are always a big draw for me as well Carol!
Yep! So thankful for wonderful authors!
Great post Carol! I love books with great female characters and friendships, and diverse reads too. A strong, relatable narrator is also a must for me – and books where all the characters are realistic and three dimensional. Thank you for sharing 🙂
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! We share a lot of preferences!
I like finding diverse reads, too.
Here is my Top Ten Tuesday post.
Diverse reads are usually my most memorable!
I’m definitely a sucker for anything set in a library or a bookshop
Right?! It’s like a magnet! Lol
I’m always taken with quirky characters, too. Off to look at your list…
Love quirky characters!
There’s nothing like discovering a unique premise.
Here is our Top Ten Tuesday.
A unique premise is always intriguing!
I’m definitely in there with the books, bookshops and libraries. Irresistible.
Right?: like a magnet!
When I hear a thriller is a page turner I’m almost guaranteed to pick it up. Great list!
I love page turners!
I love books focusing on female friendship!
Yes! I’m happy to hear we both love those books!
I agree with all of these, which explains why I love your blog so much. We have very similar reading tastes, especially when it comes to historical fiction.
Happy TTT!

Sweet! Thank you! So fun to be book twins!
Favourite Authors is a big draw for me as well. I am currently in a bit of a Steinbeck phase. I recently finished ‘Grapes of Wrath’ and ‘Cannery Row’. I am currently reading ‘Travels with Charley’ and have ‘Sweet Thursday’ in my reading cue! 😀
I’m so thankful for fav authors! Happy reading!
These are all great! Stories about sisters and tight friendships are a huge plus!
They are so inspiring!
Friendships–that’s a good one to remember. I Love so many books like that. You have a good set of things to look for.,
Thanks Lisa!
Anything by a favourite author is always automatically on my radar. Honestly most of these are things that make me want to pick up a book: female friendships is always a massive one for me, books about books, sister relationships, favourite themes like found family, all of the above make me want to pick up a book!

An endless list of reasons to pick up a book!
Definitely!
More and more I’m finding myself searching to see when a favorite author’s next book is being published so I can jump on the waitlist for it at the library.
Yes, Janet! Hooray for favorite authors and new releases!
