“As a devoted reader, I know what it is for books to shape you–the person you are, the person you were then. For readers, the great thing about getting older is that you don’t lose all the other readers you’ve been.”

~ I’d Rather Be Reading, Anne Bogel

“As every reader knows, the social contract between you and a book you love is not complete until you can hand that book to someone else and say, Here, you’re going to love this.

~ These Precious Days, Ann Patchett

“For what are we born if not to aid one another?”

~ For Whom the Bell Tolls, Ernest Hemingway

“The older I get, the more I believe that the greatest kindness is acceptance.

~ A Piece of the World, Christina Baker Cline

“Kindness begins where necessity ends.”

~ The Lincoln Highway, Amor Towles

“Some people in life, Sue, are weather forecasters; whereas, other people are the weather itself.”

~ The Man Who Died Twice, Richard Osman

“Maybe joy was catching, and all it required was a well-meaning heart and plenty of friendship. Maybe it was something that couldn’t be stamped out, even in the worst of times.”

~Red Sky Over Hawaii, Sara Ackerman

“Tomorrow will be better than today. I have value and I’m important.”

~ The Girl With the Louding Voice, Abi Daré

“It does not seem that I can trust anyone,” said Frodo. Sam looked at him unhappily. “It all depends on what you want,” put in Merry. “You can trust us to stick with you through thick and thin to the bitter end. And you can trust us to keep any secret of yours closer than you keep it yourself. But you cannot trust us to let you face trouble alone, and go off without a word. We are your friends, Frodo.”

~ J.R.R. Tolkien

“”Today was a Difficult Day,” said Pooh.
(pause)
“Do you want to talk about it?” asked Piglet.
“No,” said Pooh after a bit. “No, I don’t think I do.”
“That’s okay,” said Piglet, and he came and sat beside his friend.
“What are you doing?” asked Pooh.
“Nothing, really,” said Piglet. “Only I know what Difficult Days are like. I quite often don’t feel like talking about it on my Difficult Days either.”
“But goodness,” continued Piglet, “Difficult Days are so much easier when you know you’ve got someone there for you. And I’ll always be here for you, Pooh.”
And as Pooh sat there, working through in his head his Difficult Day, while the solid, reliable Piglet sat next to him quietly, swinging his little legs…he thought that his best friend had never been more right.”

~ A.A. Milne

    • Thanks Karen! I TRY to keep a record! I’m getting better…..but it’s still challenging! Mainly, I can’t remember to write them in one place! Sometimes I highlight it in a book and forget to transfer it to my notes before the library takes it back. #bookproblems

  1. I especially love your Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. One of my favorite quotes is from A River Runs Through It:
Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world’s great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of those rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs. I am haunted by the waters.

  2. I love the one from Winnie the Pooh. Literature is such a wonderful way to teach children to care for and emphasize with one another.

  3. In my opinion, Dr. Suess is the single most quotable author. Although his books were written decades ago, they are still relevant for this generation, both kids and adults alike. Here are just a few of my many favorites.

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot. Nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.”

“Today you are you! That is truer than true! There is no one alive who is you-er than you!”

“Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.”

  4. Great quotes, Carol. I wish I were a quote collector, but I also forget to write them down. One quote that resonates with me also came from Anne Bogel’s book:

“Choosing my next book sometimes feels like a complicated dance. With so many books to read, how can I possibly decide what to read.”

    • Another great Anne quote! Thanks for sharing! I have a love/hate relationship with quotes! 😂😂😂 I write them down and I forget where I’ve put them or I highlight them in kindle and forget to retrieve them before the library takes the book back. Every year I make a promise to do better!
