Meet the Blogger Book Tag

Between the dire and heartbreaking news from Ukraine and concerns about my 6 week old granddaughter who is in the hospital with RSV (she’s doing better today!), my reading/reviewing/posting mojo has suffered. So, I think a change-of-pace book tag might be needed!

Who is your all-time favorite book character?

The first book characters I remember loving include Jo from Little Women, Scarlett from Gone With the Wind, and Nancy from Nancy Drew.

If you were stranded on a deserted island, which book would you take with you? (Survival books do not count)

In addition to the Bible, I would take a book on my lifetime favs list that I might I enjoy rereading or perhaps a classic that I’ve never read. How could you choose just one? Hopefully, I’d be able to take a solar powered kindle so that I’d have all my favorite books with me! I realize this is a non answer but it’s a difficult question for a lover of books who has soooo many favorites!

What’s your most unpopular book opinion?

I have a few, but probably the most unpopular is that I will DNF a book that has excessive profanity. I think it’s lazy writing. A writer wouldn’t overuse another word like he/she would overuse profanity. As a Christian, religious profanity is especially offensive. When I’ve noted excessive profanity in my reviews, I often have readers comment that they never noticed the profanity. I guess if this is a part of your every day vocabulary, you wouldn’t find it offensive or even notice. Check out Ten Bookish Pet Peeves for more book opinions.

What’s your weirdest bookish habit?

I don’t think it’s too weird, but I am a die hard read-a-series-in-order reader. The summer that Louise Penny first appeared on my radar, I binge read nine books in the series to be ready for the new fall installment.

What character would you bring to a family event as your fake partner?

I wouldn’t mind being accompanied by Chief Inspector Armand Gamache from the Three Pines series by Louise Penny. Gamache is well read, charming, wise, kind, and intelligent.

What made you decide to start a book blog?

I started my book blog the afternoon I arrived home from retiring from my teaching profession. I’ve always loved to read and creating life-long readers was a special joy in my teaching career. I knew I would need something in my life as consuming and as meaningful as teaching….especially during my transition to retirement. I remember driving home from school that day in tears and creating a WordPress account within minutes of walking in the door.

What about reading and books do you love the most?

So much to love! I love the world of literature and connecting with characters and themes, being transported to different locations and cultures, gaining understanding and compassion through reading about people different from me, and experiencing life from a different perspective. I love reading about real life people living their unique lives and rising above challenges and obstacles. As a life-long learner, I love learning something new.

What is your field of study/desired profession/current profession?

I’m currently retired from the teaching profession. I taught for seventeen years. Before that I worked as a graphic designer. I have degrees in graphic design and education along with my multiple-subject teaching credential. When I was young, I dreamed of owning a bookstore (obviously!) Currently, I read like it’s my job!

What are some book recommendations that became your favorite/obsessions?

I have so many favorites that have been recommended by friends and fellow readers and bloggers. I wouldn’t know where to start! I’m obsessed with book after book after book! Watch for my “best of” posts including these recent ones: Most Memorable Reads of 2021, Best of the Best 2015-2021, Ten Favorite Historical Fiction Reads of the Decade.

What is the book you shove down everyone’s throat?

I’m always trying to shove a book down a throat! I can turn any conversation into one about books and reading! To answer the question though, so much depends on the person. I love to give individual recomendations that would match her/his reading taste. Three books I’m known for urging people to read include The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd, A Place For Us by Fatima Farheen Mirza, and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. One audio book I’ve been pushing this year is Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir.
