In 2020, I decided to systematically revisit my older review posts and update them. On Thursdays, I’ll be re-sharing a few of these great reads. Today, I’m re-sharing a character-driven story from a popular author, The Dutch House by Ann Pachett. I definitely recommend the audio performed by Tom Hanks for this one!

My Summary:
“Siblings Danny and Maeve are living in The Dutch House when their mother abandons the family. Their father remarries, but after he dies, their (wicked) stepmother kicks Danny and Maeve out of her life and out of the house. Suddenly, all Danny and Maeve have is each other. This story explores their complicated lives and relationships.”

Novels by Ann Patchett have always been a hit and miss for me (I liked only one of the three books I read), so I definitely wouldn’t call myself a fan. The Dutch House wasn’t for me, I didn’t enjoy it at all.
I hope there are others who did like it.
I think the audio saved the day for me! It’s a dreary book but Tom Hanks added the life!
I’m sure that helps but I just can’t concentrate on audiobooks. Love Tom Hanks. Did you read his book?
Audio isn’t my first choice of format …I usually have one going while driving. If I’m just around the house audio doesn’t work for me. I didn’t read his book….too many mixed reviews I guess.
Even though I’m not a fan of short stories in general, I really like it. See her.

I adore Tom Hanks! I think his short story collection would be thoughtfully and tenderly put together!
Loved this book – especially the house! I’ve read all her books and made a pilgrimage to her book shop in Nashville a couple years ago on a cross country road trip. Do you know she has a new book coming out? These Precious Days — book of essays.
The Tom Hanks narration of this is fabulous! He IS Danny!
I agree Carol, I tried to read it and couldn’t get into it. Then I found the audiobook and was thrilled with Tom Hanks narration.

This is one of my favourite book covers – I find it mesmerising. The book didn’t wow me in the way I was hoping it would because I found the sister’s attitude irritating.
While I listened to the audio narrated by Tom Hanks, I wondered if I would have enjoyed the print version. There were plenty of unlikeable characters!
