My Summary:

Since 1984, Alex Trebek has been the beloved and respected host of Jeopardy! Last year, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and received an outpouring of support from fans. In response, Trebek felt compelled to write the story of his life and career highlights. As might be expected, each chapter title is in the form of a question.

My Thoughts:

The soundtrack of my early evenings. For three decades, Jeopardy! has played in the background of my life. Some nights when I wasn’t giving baths, helping with homework, lesson planning, or grading papers, I would settle in front of the TV for thirty minutes challenging myself to answer a couple of the questions. I’ve enjoyed the various tournaments for college students and teachers. My seven-year-old grandson who currently lives with us can be heard humming the Jeopardy! theme song at random times during the day! Our extended family watched the GOAT (Greatest Of All Time) Tournament last year and rooted for our favorite player. The person who backed the winner won a dinner at our local favorite dinner house (but then the pandemic came and we still need to follow through with the dinner!). Jeopardy! and Alex Trebek were always there for us….every single night of the week. Are you a Jeopardy! fan?

The Writing: Reading The Answer Is… is like a visit across the dinner table with Alex Trebek. It’s simply told and conversational.

The Content: In short chapters, Trebek shares the highlights of his childhood, career, and cancer diagnosis. Throughout the telling, I came to understand how extremely important and meaningful the roles of father, husband, and game show host are to him. He’s a humble man and committed to favorite charities and being a kind and thoughtful person. Trebek made the world a better place.

If You Are a Fan: Devoted fans of Alex Trebek and Jeopardy! will definitely want to read his story. Trebek felt like a family friend as a result of his nightly appearances in our living room. If you are not a Jeopardy! fan or have never heard of Alex Trebek, this memoir might not be as interesting for you.

We will miss you, Alex Trebek.

  1. I used to watch it on and off – the questions were always so interesting. Not to mention the sheer amount of info people on the show know 😳
