My Summary:

You’ve Got Mail meets Tell Me Three Things meets With the Fire on High…

grilled cheese sandwichThe setting is New York City. Pepper (Patricia) is the swim team captain at her private school, achievement-focused, and a perfectionist. Her family owns a large fast-food burger chain, and Pepper runs the twitter account. Jack is a classmate and fellow swim team member. He secretly develops apps, enjoys being a class clown, and experiences episodes of sibling rivalry with his twin brother. Jack’s family owns a small downtown deli. A few things happen to put the story in motion: the big burger chain copies (steals) Jack’s family’s grilled cheese sandwich, a twitter war ensues that Jack and Pepper instigate and fuel, and Jack and Pepper find themselves becoming close friends on the school’s app where identities remain anonymous.

My Thoughts:

The Writing: Tweet Cute is a fun, engaging, and fast-paced read with a multilayered plot. I appreciate the minimal use of profanity, no drug use, and the innocent romance and first-love story line. If parents are looking for appropriate reads for younger YA readers, this is suitable for 14+. I appreciate the page-turning plot and the complicated relationships add depth. Told in alternating points of view, the narrative is filled with texts, tweets, and tech slang and terminology which YA readers might love.

Likable Characters: From my perspective, I think all the characters are likable, realistic, and interesting. As a bonus, I was able to clarify what “shipping” means!!! (and I think I could use it in a sentence…except the young people in my family might roll their eyes!)

Themes: Thoughtful themes include family expectations and relationships, friendship, sibling relationships, pressures of achievement, loyalty, supporting family, finding your voice, coming of age, family businesses, and first love.

Recipe: Talk of dessert figures prominently into the narrative. Here is the recipe (from the author’s website) for Monster Cake.

Recommend: I recommend Tweet Cute for fans of light reading and engaging YA romcom, for parents looking for appropriate reads for younger readers in the YA genre, and for readers who love a well-told and compelling story.

My Rating:  4 Stars

Meet the Author, Emma Lord

Author, Emma Lord

Emma Lord is a digital media editor and writer living in New York City, where she spends whatever time she isn’t writing either running or belting show tunes in community theater. She graduated from the University of Virginia with a major in psychology and a minor in how to tilt your computer screen so nobody will notice you updating your fan fiction from the back row. She was raised on glitter, grilled cheese, and a whole lot of love. Her sun sign is Hufflepuff, but she is a Gryffindor rising.

    • Thanks Jonetta! Save it for when you need a change of pace! It has a bit of substance and lots of entertainment value!

    • I read the book and don’t think the voice came off too young. It had that youthfulness without being a whiny teen brat thing going on. It was perfect!

    • Thanks Nicki! Members of my online book club affectionately call it the 1,000 calorie cake! One member who made it with her daughter said it’s ok but they wouldn’t make it again.

  1. I’ve been wanting to read this forever now because it just looks so cute and fun!! I’ll definitely be picking it up now. Great review ❤️

  2. This sounds really cute Carol. I was immediately drawn to the grilled cheese, I love a good grilled cheese. I also like that there is little or no sex, drugs or profanity. I may give this one a go for a change of pace. Nice review.

  3. […] I love the epistolary format, so the beginning of this story was well executed. I wish the charming emails had continued for a while after Nick realized who she was. I also appreciate why he didn’t want to lie. However, this led to more lies which landed him in the unlikeable character category (in my opinion). If you like the You’ve Got Mail premise, you might enjoy The Neighbor Factor. Two other stories I’ve read and reviewed with a You’ve Got Mail premise are Hana Khan Carries On and Tweet Cute. […]
