My Summary:

No new people….

In the long tradition of other beloved, quirky characters, Annie Mercer feels best when she limits her interactions with new people. As a scientist, she analyzes her life experiences through the lens of science. Suddenly her organized life is turned upside down: she loses her job, curiosity about a new neighbor consumes her, her fiance takes a leave of absence, and a personable and charismatic private investigator surprises her. Ultimately Annie is faced with some big, life-changing decisions.

My Thoughts:

Quirky + Snappy + Epistolary = a fun read!

Quirky Character: If you’ve followed my reviews for long, you know that I adore quirky characters striving to live their best lives. Annie Mercer joins a long list of my favorites. She has “a black belt in task execution,” is afraid of being hurt, and has taken “a vow of interpersonal abstinence” which means “no new people.” Life gets complicated when she meets Mo who encourages her to risk again and challenges her with his positive outlook, hoping that “everything that comes your way is better than what has gone before.”

Writing: In addition to the quirky and likable character, I enjoyed the snappy and well-paced writing, light sarcasm, and the epistolary format (journal entries, texts, emails). Although This Won’t End Well is somewhat predictable in places, I adore the way the author unfolds Annie. The interactions between scientific-minded Annie and her essential oils/crystals selling best friend are laugh-out-loud hilarious:

“…you never actually apologized for mistaking your oldest friend for a sales prospect…”

“For the love of Marie Curie, please unsubscribe me from your mailing list.”

Themes: Thoughtful themes include friendship, finding your voice, taking risks, confronting workplace harassment, and believing the best is yet to come.

Recommended: This Won’t End Well came to me at just the time I was looking for something light, easy reading, engaging, entertaining, and redemptive. I think you might like it too! It would make a fun vacation or weekend read and an appropriate and thoughtful gift for a girlfriend or your mom. This feel-good PG story with a side of romance is a book that book clubs might enjoy, too.

Light content or trigger warnings: an incidence of workplace sexual harassment, a suspicion of domestic abuse, discussions of racism, grief, reference to a school shooting
