For winter, I have four out of ten nonfiction titles on my TBR because of the wonderful recommendations I noted during Nonfiction November! I’m not a seasonal reader, but I’m eager to hunker down with some great nonfiction selections this winter!

I never plan more than ten titles for my quarterly TBR lists because I need to leave time for mood reading and review commitments. These ten books are a priority on a much longer general TBR.

What is your most anticipated read this winter?

I’m linking up today with Girlxoxo and Traveling With T for Month of Faves: Winter Reading, and also with That Artsy Reader Girl for Top Ten Tuesday: Winter To Read List.

Winter 2019 TBR

Seven Fallen Feathers: Racism, Death, and Hard Truths in a Northern City by Tanya Talaga

Seven Fallen Feathers

***UPDATE: I’m DNFing this at 30%. Child abuse is too sad for me.

The Girl With Seven Names: Escape From North Korea by Hyeonseo Lee

The Girl with Seven Names

***UPDATE: 4.5 Stars. A compelling and memorable read. Full review here.

The Only Plane in the Sky: An Oral History of 9/11 by Garrett M Graff

The Only Plane in the Sky

***UPDATE: 5 Stars. A compelling and heartbreaking read. Full review here.

Red at the Bone by Jacqueline Woodson

Red at the Bone

***UPDATE: 3 Stars. A poignant multilayered family drama. Brief Goodreads review here.

Born a Crime: Stories From a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah

Born a Crime

***UPDATE: 4 Stars. With candor and insight, Trevor Noah shares honestly about the realities of living as a mixed race person during the Apartheid years. It was informative to experience life through his eyes, and he forced me to think about issues I’ve never thought about before. (Some profanity, abuse, and animal cruelty) Full Review Here.

Middle Grade

Beverly, Right Here by Kate DiCamillo

Beverly, Right Here

***UPDATE: 3.5 Stars. Sweet MG read.

Young Adult

The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo

The Poet X

***UPDATE: 4 Stars. Reminiscent of On the Come Up. Review to come.

Lady Clementine By Marie Benedict (Pub Date: Jan 7, 2020)

~Denise J Hughes

“Reading good books ruins you for enjoying bad ones.”
~Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

  1. You have some excellent books on this list. A lot of heavy topics, I will be interested in seeing what you think about them. The only one on my TBR right now is The Little Bookshop on the Seine by Rebecca Raisin, but I may be adding more.

  2. I just too delivery of a different North Korean book thanks to Non Fiction November. Mine is
In Order To Live: A North Korean Girl’s Journey to Freedom. I have my eye on the 9/11 book too

    • That’s interesting! Thanks for sharing! I need to look that up! Sounds like a great companion read!
I just read a review on Instagram of the 9-11 book and she said she needed to read it in small chunks because it was emotional and overwhelming…..especially for those of us who experienced that day I think!

  3. I have the 9/11 on my TBR right now. And I added a few new ones to my list of those coming out in January-February. Thanks for alerting me to them.

  4. Born A Crime and The Poet X are both great, but I listened to The Poet X on audiobook, which I normally don’t. And I found it really great, read by the author. I’ve heard Born a Crime is really good as audio too, but the book was very good, regardless.

    • Thanks for the recs! Audio isn’t my first choice but I know some books are best on audio! I can imagine that Poet X is one of those! I listened to The Dutch House on audio (because Tom Hanks) and I can’t imagine reading it any other way! Thanks for commenting!

  5. I still haven’t read Borm a Crime yet either – and I plan to get to it next year. I’m going to listen to the audiobook, as I’ve heard really good things about experiencing it that way.
