10 Favorite Memoirs:

Is there something specific you look for when choosing a nonfiction read? A favorite genre? A favorite tone or theme or subject?

My favorite nonfiction tends to be memoirs…..not celebrity memoirs or misery memoirs or fluffy-I’m-going-to-write-some-words-and-fill-300-pages memoirs….but substantial and thought-provoking memoirs that have a theme beyond the author’s personal experience. Some examples include:

  2. The Glass Castle is one of my all-time favorites, such an amazing book!

    I’ve heard lots of good things about Unbroken and think I even have a copy of it somewhere, I really need to get to that one. And I remember coming across Tell Me More last year when it came out and for some reason never added it to my list, it sounds really lovely. Thanks for reminding me of it. Wonderful list of memoirs!!

    • It is a difficult read…..especially in the middle section when he was detained by the Japanese……I had to skim some of that section …… in every other part, I was hanging on every word! I didn’t see the movie because I was afraid I couldn’t handle it.

    • Boys in the Boat is languishing on my TBR! I liked In Pieces and it was more tragic than I anticipated! I thought about Columbine but at the time I was teaching and just felt it might be too triggering for me. Thanks for sharing Jonetta! 👍😍

  18. I have not read The Glass Castle although I have had a copy on my bookshelf for quite awhile now. I am hoping to read at least one non-fiction book a month in 2020 to try and increase the amount of non-fiction I read. I will keep some of these in mind, although I have read both of the Mitch Albom books.
