Historical fiction with a generous serving of mystery, intrigue, suspense, and romance!

My Summary:

An ex WW11 war correspondent, a former American soldier, and an extraordinary Russian woman pilot team up to hunt down a Nazi war criminal known as The Huntress. The duel timeline fills in the past and follows the present-day intrigue. The two timelines merge in a thrilling and suspenseful conclusion.

My Thoughts:

The Writing: Kate Quinn is well-known for writing well-researched histfic and intricately crafted stories. The Huntress does not disappoint! It’s everything a reader hopes for in a thrilling histfic story: vivid details, well-drawn and complex characters, and a compelling story line. I consider it somewhat “gritty” and it’s also long (560 pages). One concern with the plot is that an event that happened late in the book didn’t seem in character for The Huntress (I was relieved that she chose the action she did, it just didn’t seem to logically fit with her prior crimes….I can’t say more for fear of spoilers). Don’t miss the author’s notes for details on her research and content decisions.

Characters: Colorful, interesting, and memorable! I appreciate that the characters are complicated at times and not always 100 percent likable. Their motivations are complex and closely guarded personal secrets are eventually revealed. The most amazing of the characters is Nina, the fearless Russian pilot who flew in WW11 as part of the daring night witches. This is why I love histfic….always something new to learn!

Themes: One compelling and driving theme is justice for war criminals. Other thoughtful themes include teamwork, partnership, friendship, trust, taking risks, following your instincts, finding your voice, hiding in plain sight, and found family.

Content notes: There are typical WW11 situations, one reference to the murder of children, a sprinkling of profanity (F-bombs), and some romance (male/female and female/female). Although intense at times, I didn’t feel it was overly graphic.

Recommended: I can recommend The Huntress for fans of compelling and sometimes gritty historical fiction with generous servings of mystery, intrigue, and romance; for readers who appreciate complex and imperfect characters who are committed to seeing justice served; and for book clubs.

Meet the Author, Kate Quinn

Kate Quinn is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of historical fiction. A native of southern California, she attended Boston University where she earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Classical Voice. She has written four novels in the Empress of Rome Saga, and two books in the Italian Renaissance, before turning to the 20th century with “The Alice Network” and “The Huntress.” All have been translated into multiple languages. Kate and her husband now live in San Diego with two rescue dogs named Caesar and Calpurnia, and her interests include opera, action movies, cooking, and the Boston Red Sox.
