A Quick Summer Reading Update

MMD Reading Guide

The graphic above is the 2019 Modern Mrs. Darcy Summer Reading Guide. A majority of my summer TBR is chosen from this guide, so I thought it would be fun to share the guide and my progress. I’ve read thirteen titles so far and I have The Unlikely Adventures of the Shirgill Sisters, Searching for Sylvie Lee, the Huntress, and Recursion on hold at the library. There are also a few I’ve crossed off and decided not to read based on reviews or descriptions or my tastes.

Have you read any of these titles?

Happy Summer Reading Book Buddies!

“Ah, how good it is to be among people who are reading.”
~Rainer Maria Rilke

“I love the world of words, where life and literature connect.”
~Denise J Hughes

“Reading good books ruins you for enjoying bad ones.”
~Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

“I read because books are a form of transportation, of teaching, and of connection! Books take us to places we’ve never been, they teach us about our world, and they help us to understand human experience.”
~Madeleine Riley, Top Shelf Text

    • Thanks Jennifer! I’m trying to match your pace of one review every day! 😂 I’d love to know your routine/schedule and how you do it!!!

  1. What a fun reading guide! And this is a great way to monitor progress. 💖 i’m looking forward to reading Ask Again, Yes 💖

  2. Hi Carol! I read The Inheritance this summer. An interesting premise– but the author had a different personality than me I guess, and I just thought there was too much introspective drama. But I’ve never been in her shoes. Maybe it’s more traumatic than I could imagine. What did you think? xo

    • Well……I thought it was bit dramatic too……it seems like she was the most upset about the betrayal……that they would dare to deceive her. I was amazed that she seemed to have lost the foundation of her life through this discovery. Her entire sense of self was wrapped up in her father’s family history. It made me wonder how she might cause other adopted children to feel when she went on and on and on about her lack of a father. We always assure adopted children that we love them no differently than our bio children. I loved the part when she met with her aunt and the aunt set her straight about the def of family is who loves you and takes care of you…..opening Dani’s heart again to her loving and devoted father. I don’t think she took into consideration the secrets that that generation kept and took to their graves! The deceit wasn’t intentionally meant to hurt her, it’s just how people in that generation dealt with these matters. These issues were adult concerns and children were not privy to adult matters like they are today! It sure brings up interesting ethical dilemmas! My hubs was just conversing with a person on Ancestry who found out her dad wasn’t her bio dad after a recent dna test. Of course her mom died last year and now she’s left with all these questions. I’m afraid there will be many of these cases to come. Women in that generation who had affairs were likely to pass off an unexpected pregnancy as their husband’s! And I suppose many donors are wondering when they might be hearing from their offspring! This would make a great book club discussion! I thought the book was too long and repetitive….it certainly could’ve been edited for length. I get the impression she was still working through it during the writing process. So….although I thought it was interesting and brought up ethical issues, I wish it had been at least 50 pages shorter!
